Siding for Wood Village homes

Wood Village is one of the smallest cities in Oregon, tucked between Gresham, Fairview and Troutdale. Six-Point Siding, Inc. is based in Gresham, so this is our backyard. Dave Shaffer is a second-generation sider with about 40 years of experience. He is licensed in Oregon (CCB #153635, business licensed since 2002) and is personally on every job.

A little history, and what it means for your walls

Wood Village started during World War II. According to the city’s own history, it was built on farmland around the Arata Estate in 1942 to house workers for the Reynolds aluminum plant. Developer W. C. Bauman built roughly 183 homes along with temporary apartments. The temporary apartments are gone, but the original village homes remain part of the community.

Those are small, simple houses from the 1940s era. After 70-plus years, here is what we tend to find on homes of that age:

  • Original wood siding that has been painted and caulked many times, sometimes with layers of failed paint.
  • Rot at the bottom courses and window sills, where small houses sit close to grade.
  • Old additions and patches where different siding was mixed in, which makes it hard for walls to shed water consistently.
  • Lead paint. Homes built before 1978 can have it under newer coats. It matters when siding comes off.

Wood Village also has newer homes and developments around the edges, and the issues there are usually flashing and caulk details rather than age.

Siding choices for older small homes

Small older homes look best when the siding fits the scale of the house. Two good routes:

Whichever you choose, the build-up behind the siding matters more than the face. Water-resistive barrier, flashing at every opening and a drainage gap are what keep Oregon rain out. Read our guide to rainscreen and house wrap.

What the weather does here

Wood Village gets the Portland area’s 150-plus rain days. It sits at the mouth of the Columbia Gorge corridor, so east wind in cold snaps can drive rain sideways into joints and trim. On a house with older wood siding, the first sign is usually soft trim or peeling paint at the lower corners. Our dry rot guide shows what to check.

Services

We do not do vinyl siding, LP SmartSide, gutters, roofing or standalone painting.

Permits

Check with the City of Wood Village about permits. The city is small, so ask who issues building permits and what triggers one. Small repairs often do not need a permit, while a full re-side may. Our permits guide lists good questions to ask.

Why Wood Village homeowners call Dave

Dave looks at the house himself and tells you what he sees. The estimate is free. Our cost guide explains what drives price. You can also look up our CCB license.

Wood Village siding questions

Can older Wood Village homes be re-sided without losing their look?

Yes. HardiePlank in a cedarmill finish gives the cedar-lap look with less upkeep, and real cedar is also an option. Dave matches reveal and trim details so the house keeps its character.

Do older homes need lead-safe work when siding is replaced?

Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint, and lead-safe rules can apply. Dave will talk through how they apply to your house at the estimate.

Who handles building permits in Wood Village?

Check with the City of Wood Village. Ask whether your project needs a permit and who issues it. Small repairs often do not need one, but a full re-side might.
